Welcome
Welcome to the home page for Tasmanian Government schools' improvement reports. As one of my first official duties as Minister for Education, I am pleased to provide the Tasmanian Community with the third annual snapshot of our public education system with the release of Tasmania's Education Performance Report 2009 - Government Schools. The report can be found at: www.education.tas.gov.au/dept/reports/tasmanias-education-performance-report
The release of the school improvement reports for 2009 will enable the community to compare achievement and improvement since 2007, particularly around the Government's priority areas of the early years, literacy and numeracy, student retention, school improvement and equity.
It is very encouraging to see that achievement across the early years is high, and trending up in literacy. The highly valued 'Launching into Learning' program is doing a great job in getting more children ready to learn when they begin Kindergarten. These early foundations will assist children with their learning right through their school years, providing we make every day at school count for them. Of course, that is a responsibility for parents as well as for teachers.
The outcomes of our literacy and numeracy testing show Tasmania to be at about the middle of the other states and territories. Understanding the NAPLAN data has enabled us to direct more resources to those schools with the greatest need, and particularly to those schools where the outcomes are a concern.
Parents and the community can now see annual improvement achieved by our schools and can monitor progress over time as well as celebrate the improvement successes of our schools.
The Tasmanian Government is committed to improving educational outcomes and the school improvement reports are important tools in measuring our progress towards achieving our goals and enabling resources to be directed to where there is the greatest need.
