Schools receive an annual resource package for the purpose of providing educational programs for students throughout that year. Schools may also receive other funding from the Department as well as receiving income from other sources. Generally, like the resource package, these funds should be used in the year that they are received. However, in some circumstances, schools may need to carry funds over from one year to the next. A reasonable carry over is 25% of a school's annual resourcing package. As at January 31 2009, Bruny Island District School has carried over the equivalent of 44% of its annual resourcing package. Schools also receive additional funding to help reduce early years class sizes. The average class size at Bruny Island District School for groups containing Prep and Year 1 students is 16.

Information about Bruny Island District School (provided by the school)
Bruny Island District School is Tasmania’s and Australia’s southernmost school. We are an isolated, rural community separated from mainland Tasmania by the D'Entrecasteaux Channel and accessible only by vehicular ferry. In 2008 we had a school population of 48 students from kindergarten to grade six. We are also a Launching into Learning School and our program Little Penguins takes place on Tuesdays and Fridays. A large proportion of our savings from 2007 is to pay for the staffing and resources for our Launching into Learning progam. Our specialists include Music, German and Physical Education. We have been involved in the Active After School Program for two years. In 2009 we have been selected to participate in Move Well Eat Well- a state initiative to promote healthy lifestyles in Primary School children. We have also been selected for the Australian Sustainable Schools Initiative. Our school farm and vegetable patch are integral to our curriculum. Our farm includes a Hampshire Downs Stud, cattle, hens and turkeys. This report summarises results obtained from a variety of sources. Our results reflect high level of parent and student satisfaction. This is a result of our supportive school environment and connectedness to our community. There has been an increase in general staff satisfaction. Our birth-to- four program has further strengthened our Readiness for School and our Early Literacy and Early Numeracy in Prep. The School Improvement Report also identifies improvements in Year 3 and 5 literacy which is based on National Testing Reading Scores. Our average score for Year 3 Numeracy is above the intermediate range across Tasmanian schools and the average score for Year 5 Numeracy sits within the intermediate range. Due to our small cohorts there is insufficient data to draw conclusions in relation to index scores for numeracy. Student attendance has improved and sits within average range. Staff attendance is stable which reflects the level of staff satisfaction. School programs and structures cater for individual needs and children enjoy learning and growing in our stimulating, safe environment.
