Schools receive an annual resource package for the purpose of providing educational programs for students throughout that year. Schools may also receive other funding from the Department as well as receiving income from other sources. Generally, like the resource package, these funds should be used in the year that they are received. However, in some circumstances, schools may need to carry funds over from one year to the next. A reasonable carry over is 25% of a school's annual resourcing package. As at January 31 2009, Flinders Island District High School has carried over the equivalent of 64% of its annual resourcing package. Schools also receive additional funding to help reduce early years class sizes. The average class size at Flinders Island District High School for groups containing Prep and Year 1 students is 16.

Information about Flinders Island District High School (provided by the school)
Flinders Island is the largest of the Furneaux group of islands which lie at the eastern end of Bass Strait. It is approximately 151 km by air from Launceston, the nearest Tasmanian city to the island. Flinders Island has approximately 900 permanent residents. This thriving community produces sheep, wool, cattle, milk-fed lambs, crayfish, abalone, wine and wallaby. Flinders Island District High School was first established in 1911. Located approximately 2 km east of the main township, Whitemark, the school boasts a full range of facilities. These include a 20 acre farm, full size gymnasium, 25m swimming pool, computer and science laboratories, trade facilities and specialist teaching areas, classrooms and playgrounds. The school caters for students from Kindergarten to Grade 12. The students are drawn from three main population centres as well as from outlying areas on the island. Membership of the North East Education and Training Centre (NEET) enables the school to provide local learning options for students in year 11 and 12. Our 0-4 years program operates in conjunction with other community early years programs, all of whom are members of the newly formed Flinders Island Early Years Development Group. Over recent years, the steadily decreasing population on the island has been reflected in a decline in the number of students at the school. During the past three years however, enrolments have remained steady. They currently stand at 96 students. Although the school faces many challenges associated due to it being situated in an isolated environment, the students are provided with high levels of support. Strong links between the school, parents, Parents and Friends Association, School Association and community groups ensures that the educational experience for students at Flinders Island District High school is one that is of high quality. Overall data for the school and student achievement is very strong.
