Schools receive an annual resource package for the purpose of providing educational programs for students throughout that year. Schools may also receive other funding from the Department as well as receiving income from other sources. Generally, like the resource package, these funds should be used in the year that they are received. However, in some circumstances, schools may need to carry funds over from one year to the next. A reasonable carry over is 25% of a school's annual resourcing package. As at January 31 2009, Gagebrook Primary School has carried over the equivalent of 49% of its annual resourcing package. Schools also receive additional funding to help reduce early years class sizes. The average class size at Gagebrook Primary School for groups containing Prep and Year 1 students is 21.

Gagebrook Primary School is set in a broad acre housing estate that has high unemployment (25.5%), the community has a median age of 22 years, 48% of families are single parent families, and only 15% of the population has completed education above year 10. Our major foci are social skills, literacy, and numeracy. Gagebrook Primary School's 'engage' social skilling program runs daily at the beginning of each day and operates in teams across the school. Each fortnight the school introduces a new teaching focus based on the current social needs and/or events in the school. Each focus is linked to the four school values of Community, Quality, Courage and Respect. These 'hooks' are embedded in all aspects of our curriculum. Each classroom has a minimum of two hours teacher aide time which is timetabled to include the daily literacy block.
