Schools receive an annual resource package for the purpose of providing educational programs for students throughout that year. Schools may also receive other funding from the Department as well as receiving income from other sources. Generally, like the resource package, these funds should be used in the year that they are received. However, in some circumstances, schools may need to carry funds over from one year to the next. A reasonable carry over is 25% of a school's annual resourcing package. As at January 31 2009, King Island District High School has carried over the equivalent of 35% of its annual resourcing package. Schools also receive additional funding to help reduce early years class sizes. The average class size at King Island District High School for groups containing Prep and Year 1 students is 21.

Information about King Island District High School (provided by the school)
King Island District High School is a K-10 campus on an extremely geographically isolated Bass Strait island, accessible only by plane from Tasmania and Victoria. It is a small school (approx 200 students) with some very small grade cohorts in various year levels. It is the only school on the island and, as such, provides for a very diverse range of families and student needs. The King Island community is a highly industrious, very safe community with a strong work ethic and full employment. Many of our students are from farming families and are used to working outside school hours from quite an early age. However, it is a globally connected community with modern technology enabling our population to communicate widely and have access to the rest of the world. Young people on King Island are much like young people anywhere else in Australia.
